The Executive Committee of the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) convened yesterday in a regular session and examined the state of the economy as it develops after the start of military operations in the Middle East.
In this context, the Executive Committee of OEB finds that:
- Cyprus has been and remains a safe and reliable destination for international investments, unhindered business activity and quality tourism.
- Maintaining the stability, security and smooth functioning of the economy is a top priority and a collective duty.
- The resilience of the Cypriot economy has been tested in recent years in extremely adverse conditions and has proven to be strong institutionally, operationally and operationally in the face of all kinds of crises and international or regional geopolitical turbulence.
- Sectors of the economy related to the tourism industry and companies with export activity to the countries of the Gulf and the wider Middle East (including the pharmaceutical industries) are facing challenges, which will be handled with prudence, composure and efficiency.
- Cyprus’ businesses continue to operate responsibly and send a message of stability for the economy and the country.
Based on the above, the Executive Committee of OEB appeals to every Cypriot to contribute to the clarification of the true picture regarding the security of the country and the elimination of false impressions created internationally during the first days of military operations. Specifically, we can:
- to lower the tone in the public debate,
- to bring the conversation back to our everyday issues and creative priorities, and
- To return to our normality as soon as possible.
Furthermore, OEB calls for the immediate restoration of the planning and the realization in Cyprus of all the meetings, events and activities of the various Bodies of the European Union that have been postponed, on the basis of an incorrect assessment of the risk and the exaggeration in the promotion of events during the first days of the crisis.
This request will be submitted personally by the President of OEB, Mr. Giorgos Pantelidis, in a meeting he will have in Brussels next Wednesday, March 18, with the President of the European Commission, Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, Mr. Antonio Costa.
OEB, on behalf of the country’s business community, will continue to systematically monitor developments in the region and actively contribute to the public debate with the aim of ensuring economic stability, protecting business activity and maintaining the sustainable development of the Cypriot economy.
