The European Parliament yesterday approved a revision of European Union (EU) rules on the coordination of social security systems, with the aim of ensuring fair and clear access to social security for EU workers living or working in another EU member state.
The ten-year overdue update of the Regulation on the Coordination of Social Security Systems establishes clearer criteria for determining the social security legislation applicable to EU workers who reside or work in another Member State, and provides important clarification on how periods of employment, self-employment or insurance completed in different Member States are to be taken into account; in the assessment of their rights.
At the same time, it encourages Member States to exchange the necessary information in a timely manner to detect errors or fraud, including abusive practices.
The Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) congratulates the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Marinos Moushiouttas, and his staff, who, in the framework of the Presidency of the Council of the EU by the Republic of Cyprus, managed to successfully complete the revision of these rules, a process that has been pending for 10 years.
