Methodological Information

Definitions

The CPI is an economic indicator compiled to measure the changes over time in the prices of consumer goods and services acquired, used or paid for by households (they reside in Cyprus or intend to reside in Cyprus for at least one year). The CPI is the official indicator for calculating inflation.

Inflation shows the change in the CPI compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

The Impact represents the amount of the total change in the CPI, which is due to the mentioned category/good/service.

Pricing

Pricing is carried out only in the urban areas of the Districts of Nicosia, Larnaca, Limassol and Paphos. For each city, the price fluctuations per product and service for each month are weighted according to the population. Specifically, the weighting factors for the four districts are as follows: Nicosia 40%, Limassol 30%, Larnaca 18% and Paphos 12%.

The prices of the 850 products and services included in the CPI are monitored and recorded once a month, except for some seasonal products (e.g. vegetables and fruits), meat and fuel, whose prices are collected every week (every Thursday).

Base Year

From January 2026 onwards, 2025=100 is adopted as the reference year. The base year from January 2016 to December 2025 was 2015=100.

Classification

Until December 2025, the CPI was calculated and published on the basis of the ECOICOP classification. From January 2026 onwards, the CPI is calculated and published based on the ECOICOP classification ver.2. The lowest level of detail for the ECOICOP ver.2 classification used in the CPI is the five digits of resolution.

Products/Services and Weights

Effective January 2026, both the products and services contained in the CPI and their weights have been revised. The review was based on the results of the 2023 Household Budget Survey.
