New Call for data on unprocessed fresh produce packaging

EFSA has received a request for a scientific opinion to support the European Commission in the future development of guidelines for the implementation of point 2 of Annex V of Regulation (EU) 2025/40 on Packaging and Packaging Waste. This request focuses on the phasing out of single-use plastic packaging for prepacked fresh fruit and vegetables weighing less than 1.5 kg.

The purpose of this call for data is to invite interested business operators, national authorities, research organisations and academia to contribute evidence on:

• Current packaging practices for unprocessed fresh produce.
• Plastic and alternative packaging systems (e.g. cardboard, wood, bulk).
• Microbiological safety and quality implications of alternative packaging.
• Handling practices across the supply chain when shifting away from plastic.
• Key microbial hazards and spoilage risks associated with different packaging scenarios.

The assessment will focus on standard atmosphere packaging, excluding chemical hazards related to packaging materials.
