In the presence of more than one hundred participants, the Workshop entitled “The Mining Industry in Cyprus: Green Development – Recycling – Modern Concept and Technology” was held today, Thursday 12 June 2025 in Nicosia. The event was co-organized by the Cyprus Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) and the Mines and Quarries Service of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.
Greetings were addressed by the Deputy Director General of the General Directorate of the Environment, Mrs. Iliana Tofa-Christidou, on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr. Maria Panagiotou, the former President of OEB, Mr. Antonis Antoniou, and the Director of the Mines and Quarries Service, Mr. Stelios Michael.
During the Conference, the importance of mining activity in Cyprus was highlighted, both from a historical and developmental point of view, underlining its role in the economy, employment, industry and social development of the country.
Particular emphasis was placed on the contribution of green development, recycling and modern technologies to the sustainability of the sector as well as on the export prospects created for the future of the mining industry through innovation and environmentally responsible management of natural resources. It was also stressed that with the implementation of the new European Regulation on Critical Raw Materials, the strategic role that the sector is called upon to play in the Cypriot economy is upgraded.
Within the framework of the Conference, Dr. Georgios Constantinou and Dr. Michalis Papadopoulos for their significant and long-term contribution to the mining industry.
