Strict warning for illegal import and distribution of pharmaceutical products outside the legal supply chain

The Employers and Industrialists Federation (OEB) informs you that it has received a letter from the Pharmaceutical Services of the Ministry of Health, which draws the attention of all stakeholders to the issue of the illegal import and distribution of pharmaceutical products outside the legal and approved supply chain.

According to the information of the competent authorities, the following are highlighted:

  • The import, supply, possession, distribution and distribution of pharmaceutical products in the Republic is allowed exclusively through the legal and approved supply chain, in accordance with the applicable pharmaceutical legislation.
  • The import and marketing of medicinal products for the purpose of making available to the public is only permitted by persons or organisations holding the required authorisations.
  • Medicinal products marketed in the Republic must have a valid marketing authorisation or relevant approval from the Medicines Council, where this is provided.
  • Pharmacies must supply pharmaceutical products exclusively from approved sources, in accordance with the provisions of the legislation.

In addition, the Pharmaceutical Services report that they have become aware of cases in which pharmaceutical products are imported or traded outside the legal supply chain, with the aim of supplying and/or making them available to the public.

It is emphasized in the most categorical way that such practices constitute a serious violation of the law, endanger public health and will be treated with zero tolerance.

In these cases, the Pharmaceutical Services will immediately take all the prescribed actions, including:

  • the referral of cases to the competent prosecuting authorities, and
  • the submission of a proposal for the imposition of administrative fines by the Medicines Council, where applicable.

It is pointed out that controls will be intensified and any violation of the law will be dealt with strictly. For this reason, all affected parties are requested to fully comply with the provisions of the relevant legislation and to immediately inform the Pharmaceutical Services in case they become aware of any illegal or unapproved activity. Strict adherence to the legal supply chain is a fundamental prerequisite for ensuring public health and legality in the movement of pharmaceutical products.
