Based on the data kept at the District Labour Offices, the number of registered unemployed at the end of December 2024 reached 12,382 people. Based on data corrected for seasonal fluctuations, which show the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed in December 2024 reached 10,506 people, remaining at the same levels compared to the previous month. (Table 1)
Compared to December 2023, there was a decrease of 1,288 persons or 9.4%, mainly attributable to the sectors of financial and insurance activities, construction, accommodation and food services, professional, scientific and technical activities, as well as a decrease in the number of new entrants to the labour market. Methodological Information
Registered Unemployed
The number of registered unemployed persons refers to persons over 15 years of age who apply to the District and Local Employment Offices of the Department of Labour for employment and are registered as unemployed. These persons must be able and available for work and actively seeking employment. The monthly number of registered unemployed refers to persons who have an active application for employment on the last day of each month.
The number of registered unemployed does not include the self-employed, people looking for part-time work, as well as people looking for work in a specific area or with a specific employer.
Seasonally Corrected
Data Seasonal Correction is a statistical technique that removes the effect of seasonality from a chronological order, thereby making the actual trend in the change of a magnitude more visible. For the implementation of the seasonal correction, the Statistical Office uses the JDemetra+ 2.2.2 software, which has been developed by Eurostat.
The production of the custom time series is done with the TRAMOSEATS algorithm. It should be noted that, due to the seasonal correction, the entire chronological order of the monthly estimates is recalculated each time the data of a new month are added. This recalculation often leads to revisions of estimates for previous months. In March 2020, the model applied was readjusted.
Methodological Changes
According to an update from the Department of Labor, as of Tuesday, June 15, 2021, the automatic renewal of registrations was terminated and the online platform of the Public Employment Service was activated, to allow the registration of a new application for finding a job, its renewal, as well as the registration of a vacant position. This regulation may affect the comparison of the monthly unemployment data, recorded through this procedure, with the data recorded by the previous procedures.
Classification System
The registered unemployed by economic activity are published on the basis of the Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the Community, Rev. 2 (NACE Rev. 2).
For more information, interested parties can visit the Statistical Service Portal, Labour Market sub-topic, CYSTAT-DB (Database), Predefined Tables (Excel), Methodological Information or contact Mr. Christoforos Michaelides by phone at 22602154 or by e-mail at cmichaelides@cystat.mof.gov.cy address or with Mrs. Maria Hadjiprokopi by phone at 22602146 or by e-mail at mhadjiprokopi@cystat.mof.gov.cy.
The Predefined Tables in Excel format include data up to and including December 2021. For data from January 2022 onwards, the update is made only in the CYSTAT-DB Database.
