The Energy Agency, of the Ministry of Energy, Trade and Industry, recognizing the strategic importance of renewable hydrogen for the achievement of national energy and environmental goals, such as increasing the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in final energy consumption, reducing or even completely eliminating greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing the country’s energy security, proceeded with the preparation of the National Hydrogen Strategy (attached).
For this purpose, the Energy Agency used European funds for the preparation of a specialized study entitled: “Support REPowerEU, Country Report Cyprus“, which was completed in January 2023. This study is part of the broader European objectives of the REPowerEU programme and focuses on the development of the hydrogen market in Cyprus. It was a key tool for the formulation of the National Strategy, in combination with the results of the energy projections included in the revised National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP).
The final text of the National Hydrogen Strategy was formulated following a public consultation, which took place from 28/02/2025 to 07/04/2025 and was approved by the Council of Ministers on 25 June 2025.
The strategy focuses on concrete actions for the period 2025-2030, aimed at developing and promoting the hydrogen market, with an emphasis on the transport sector, which has been identified as the most suitable for the initial integration of hydrogen into the national energy mix.
