Methodological Information
Definitions
The Producer Price Index in Industry is a monthly index and is a composition of the individual Producer Price Indices of the domestic and external markets.
For the prices of products placed on the domestic market, the selling prices are collected excluding VAT and other duties or taxes on the products.
For the prices of products placed on the external market, FOB (free on board) prices are collected and include all charges until the goods are loaded onto the means of transport for their export destination.
The prices chosen for the compilation of the index refer mainly to the transactions between the companies that produce and sell the items selected for pricing and the companies that buy them, regardless of whether these items are then used as raw materials for the production of other products or are resold.
Purpose of the Index
The monthly Producer Price Index in Industry expresses the evolution of prices in the sectors of mining and quarrying, manufacturing industries, electricity supply and water supply and material recovery, i.e. sectors B, C, D and E of the statistical classification of economic activities NACE Rev. 2 of the European Union (EU). The indicator does not include wastewater treatment, waste collection, treatment and disposal and remediation activities, i.e. codes 37, 38.1, 38.2 and 39 of Sector E. The index may be an early indication of inflationary pressures in the economy. The overall index is broken down into an index for the domestic market and an export index.
Data Collection
The collection of data for the mining and quarrying, manufacturing industries and material recovery sectors is carried out by the Statistical Service through telephone interviews and e-mail. Prices are obtained after the first Thursday of each month from a sample of businesses. For the supply of electricity and the collection, treatment and supply of water, data are obtained from administrative sources.
Calculation Method
The Producer Price Index in Industry has 2021 as its base year, i.e. it shows the monthly change in prices in relation to the monthly average of prices in 2021. In the base year, the average of the Producer Price Indices for the twelve months is 100.0. For example, if the Producer Price Index for a month is 112.3 for an activity, this means that prices for that activity increased that month by 12.3% compared to the average monthly value of 2021.
For the compilation of the total Producer Price Index in Industry, the weighted average of the individual indices for the various sectors of Industry, as defined in the statistical classification of economic activities NACE Rev. 2. The factors used for the weighting are derived from the total sales of the enterprises during the base year (2021) and reflect the turnover of each subsector in relation to the total turnover of the Industry sector.
The compilation of the Producer Price Index in Industry is carried out in the context of the implementation of Regulation (EU) 2019/2152 on European business statistics. The Index is sent monthly to the Statistical Office of the EU (Eurostat).
