Construction Materials Price Index: May 2025

The Construction Materials Price Index for the month of May 2025 amounted to 118.92 points (based on 2021=100), recording a marginal decrease of 0.09% compared to the previous month.

Compared to the corresponding month of the previous year, the index recorded an increase of 1.34%. By main product category, increases were recorded in minerals (3.65%), mineral products (3.47%), wood, insulating, chemical and plastic products (0.48%) and electromechanical products (0.37%), while a decrease was recorded in metal products (-0.74%).

For the period January-May 2025, the index recorded an increase of 1.23% compared to the corresponding period of 2024.

Methodological Information

Definitions

The monthly Construction Materials Price Index shows the evolution of the cost of materials incurred by the contractor.

Data Collection

For the compilation of the price index of materials used in construction, the Statistical Service obtains prices (excluding VAT) from a sample of suppliers and a sample of materials with a reference date of the 15th of each month. The data is collected by telephone and e-mail.

Calculation method

The price indices have 2021 as their base year, i.e. they show the change in the price of a material compared to the average price it had in 2021. In the base year the average of the twelve-month price indices is 100. For example, if the price index of a material for a month is 101.56, this means that the price increased by 1.56% compared to the average price of 2021.

For the compilation of the total material price index, the weighted average of the individual indices for the various materials is calculated. The weights used in the weighting reflect the share of each material in total expenditure on construction materials and are derived from the value of imports and domestic production in the base year (2021).

The index published on the Statistical Service’s web portal concerns all construction projects. It is a component of the Construction Cost Index, which is sent and published by the Statistical Office of the European Union (EU) (Eurostat), in accordance with the provisions of Regulation (EU) 2019/2152 on European business statistics. The Construction Cost Index concerns only new homes.
